The reflections of the 12th-century Muslim scholar and philosopher, Al-Ghazali, are often widely misunderstood. He maintained that the Qur’an offers limitless possibilities of interpretation, likening it to an ocean with countless drops of water. He posed the question: do you not realize that the Qur’an resembles an ocean in its vastness? In his view, individuals are free to explore its boundless meanings and embark on an endless intellectual journey. By delving deeper into its wisdom, one may uncover valuable insights and emerge intellectually enriched. He further challenged people by asking why they remain confined to the surface instead of venturing into its depths. For Al-Ghazali, inquiry, intellectual growth, and even disagreement are permissible within Islam, as his thought harmoniously combines respect for tradition with openness to innovation.
